The ATSB has commenced an investigation into the collision with terrain involving an Airbus Helicopters EC 130 T2, registered VH-XWD, near Mount Disappointment, Victoria, on 31 March 2022.

In the morning, VH-XWD departed the Batman Park heliport on a charter flight to Tocumwal, with the pilot and 4 passengers on board. Another helicopter from the operator was also conducting the same flight in company. While en route, the pilot of the second helicopter lost contact with VH-XWD and notified their company. Soon after, a search and rescue operation was commenced. VH-XWD was subsequently located around midday, having collided with terrain near Mount Disappointment. The pilot and passengers sustained fatal injuries, and the helicopter was destroyed.

The evidence collection phase of the investigation will include examination of the wreckage by ATSB investigators, and the collection of other relevant evidence, including interviews with key involved parties, recorded data, weather information, witness reports, and pilot and maintenance records.

A final report will be released at the conclusion of the investigation. However, should a critical safety issue be identified during the course of the investigation, the ATSB will immediately notify relevant parties so appropriate safety action can be taken.
